About this paper

Every sector in this series has had some force pushing providers to publish — a statute, a standards body with capital behind it, a competitive market for developers. Travel has the opposite. Three Global Distribution Systems have intermediated airline content for four decades, channel managers hold the same position in hospitality, and every hotel, airline and agency sits inside a web of contracts whose exit cost is the actual product.

The result is measurable, and it inverts everything the rest of this series would predict. The United States averages 34.3 across thirty organizations, with no Exemplar, no Strong band, and a ceiling held by a volunteer non-profit standards body at 58.3. The companies that own American travel demand publish worst: Expedia scores 8.5, Hertz 3.5, Hyatt 6.2. Regulators, standards bodies and the middleware layer publish best.

That is what a market organised around intermediation produces. The intermediaries must be integrable. The brands need not be. And one organization in thirty publishes an idempotency mechanism, in an industry whose entire operational reality is state changes to a booking somebody already paid for.

  10. The investable thesis
  11. Where this is going
