The State of UK Energy APIs
What twenty-six UK energy organizations actually publish, scored — the market that mandated the pipes instead of the data, and got exactly what it compelled.
About this paper
Britain mandated the infrastructure and not the data right, and got precisely what it compelled.
Eighteen of twenty-six UK energy organizations carry a live, verified mandate — more than Australia’s fourteen — and only four publish a consumer-data API, against Australia’s thirteen. More mandates, a third of the APIs, because Britain’s obligations were pointed at pipes rather than at data.
What it has instead is a market with no Minimal band at all, the best-published distribution networks in the world — UK Power Networks and Northern Powergrid both score 94.2 on agent-readiness, higher than anything in mandated Australia — and the sector’s best consent and idempotency figures, built commercially in the absence of any rule requiring them. Octopus tops the market; the platform company Octopus built and licenses across three continents scores less than half what Octopus does, and is out-published by one of its own licensees.
