The State of Australian Energy APIs
What twenty-four Australian energy organizations actually publish, scored — proof that a statutory data mandate transplants from one industry to another, and what it costs to verify one.
About this paper
Every previous sector in this series answered a different question. Banking had a statutory mandate and scored highest. Healthcare had one and produced compliance rather than product. Insurance had none anywhere. Telecom had a standard with capital behind it and no obligation. Real estate had a mandate an industry imposed on itself, worth about two points.
None of those isolate the variable. Australia does. The Consumer Data Right — the same statute, regulator and standards body that produced the byte-for-byte contract fifty Australian banks each deployed identically — was extended to energy, and it is live. Same law, different industry.
It worked. Australia averages 41.6, the highest of the four energy markets, with agent-readiness of 57.3 against the United States’ 30.2 and fifteen of twenty-four organizations agent-native. The mandate is worth about twelve points — but only when it is verified: organizations that merely claim compliance average 30.4, lower than those with no obligation at all. And the mandate transplanted while its architecture did not, which is the finding anyone planning the next one should read first.
