The Sequoia Capital API Portfolio
A curated winners' slice of Sequoia Capital's book, scored the way a machine reads it — the highest quality and exemplar rate in the series, and the one that trails it on frontier agent-readiness.
About this paper
I read Sequoia Capital’s portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the memo, the evidence. But I owe you the sentence that governs every number in this report before any other: this is not a broad harvest of Sequoia’s book, it is a curated winners’ slice. I resolved 118 Sequoia companies into my catalog and deepened a 19-company core outward to 72 that ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. That set is quality-biased by construction, concentrated in proven late-stage infrastructure, and a fraction of Sequoia’s real book. So when this report says Sequoia leads the series, understand it leads a hand-picked slice of winners, not a random draw — and I will not let you forget it.
With that caveat load-bearing, the finding is real: these 72 companies post the highest mean composite Kin Score of any fund I have scored — 55.4 — and the highest exemplar count, eleven, led by Stripe at 84.5. Where a16z’s governance facet was a pit and Y Combinator’s a crater, Sequoia’s slice averages 59.8 on governance with only nine of fifty-two upper-band providers at a flat zero. And here is the tell that makes it worth the read: the same slice that leads on governance and contract quality trails the entire series on frontier agent-readiness — just 35% agent-native, below a16z and YC both, with idempotency at 6% and examples at 13%. Sequoia holds the governed estate, retrofitting the machine layer; the report reads that split company by company, keeps Sequoia honestly out of the apples-to-apples benchmark, and poses the one question its LPs should be asking — whether the data-infrastructure crown jewels convert their deep governed surfaces into hosted agent access before the app layer laps them.
