The Menlo Ventures API Portfolio
Every Menlo Ventures company that ships an API, scored the way a machine reads it — and why a fund that backed the author of the agentic protocol has barely shipped it in its own book.
About this paper
I read Menlo Ventures’ portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the pitch, the evidence. Menlo’s public book resolves to a set of companies in my catalog, and 60 of them ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 60, because the interface is the part of a company an integrator, an acquirer, or an agent can actually inspect — and a fund’s book of APIs is a truer signal of its bet than its thesis page.
The headline is a genuine irony. Menlo led the financing of Anthropic, the company that authored the Model Context Protocol the entire agentic ecosystem now standardizes on — and yet across Menlo’s 60 API providers, only 30% are agent-native and exactly one company ships a real hosted MCP server over its own API, and it is not Anthropic. The book is a flagship-and-a-field: one true exemplar, Anthropic at 75.1, towering over a dense developing midfield of 39 companies with a hard ceiling below it. It averages a composite Kin Score of 51.9 — near the top of every deeply-harvested fund, because a later-stage, infrastructure-heavy book holds fewer half-built APIs — but it carries one exemplar against a16z’s thirteen, and its agent-readiness rate trails every fund at scale. This report reads that signal company by company: the practice-area decomposition, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table, the head-to-head against eleven rival funds, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.
