The Lightspeed API Portfolio
Every Lightspeed company that ships an API, scored the way a machine reads it — and why the top of the book and its real agent leaders are two different lists.
About this paper
I read Lightspeed Venture Partners’ portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the pitch, the evidence. Lightspeed’s public investment list resolves to hundreds of companies in my catalog, and 144 of them ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 144, because the interface is the part of a company an integrator, an acquirer, or an agent can actually inspect — and a fund’s book of APIs is a truer signal of the fund’s bet than its thesis page.
The headline is subtler than the funds on either side of Lightspeed produced. Lightspeed is the median fund of the deeply-harvested set — 144 API providers, a mean composite Kin Score of 50.8, six exemplars, and 38% agent-native — sitting almost exactly at the center of every column in the benchmark. But the average hides a fault line: the two highest-scoring companies in the whole book, MuleSoft and Temporal, are the weakest exemplars on genuine agent-readiness, while the companies that actually lead the fund into the agentic era — Stripe, Composio, Polygon, Brale, and Finix — sit a full band below them on the composite. The top of Lightspeed’s book and the front of its agent thesis are two different lists, and reading them as one is the mistake this report exists to prevent. Inside: the three-part spine, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table, the head-to-head against ten rival funds, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.
