The Kleiner Perkins API Portfolio

A small book with the densest top end I have measured, where every exemplar is a frontier AI or design-infra bet and the mature franchises ship breadth but no agent surface.

About this paper

I read Kleiner Perkins’s portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the pitch, the evidence. Kleiner’s public investment list resolves into my catalog, and 63 of its companies ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 63, because the interface is the part of a company an integrator, an acquirer, or an agent can actually inspect — and a fund’s book of APIs is a truer signal of its bet than its thesis page.

The headline is a strength stated with a boundary. Kleiner holds the densest top end of any fund I have harvested — four exemplar-band API companies inside a book of just 63, an exemplar rate that beats a16z and more than triples Y Combinator. That is genuine, and the fund should take the credit. But read the four names — Anthropic (75.1), Databricks (73.7), Figma (73.0), Fal (70.3) — and every exemplar is a frontier AI or design-infra bet. The ceiling of this portfolio is concentrated entirely in the frontier cohort, while a long tail of mature franchises scores on contract breadth and ships zero agent surface — and even the model vendor at the center of the agentic wave has not fronted its own API with a hosted MCP. This report reads that signal company by company: the practice-area decomposition, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table, the benchmark against the deep-harvest funds with the small-sample caveat stated plainly, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.

What's inside

  1. Executive summary — the densest top end I have measured, and the boundary around it
  2. The firm, and the book — the 63 API-bearing companies
  3. Portfolio decomposition — the frontier owns the quality (all four exemplars AI or design-infra)
  4. The composite Kin Score of the book — and why governance is the weakness
  5. Agent-readiness of the portfolio — 33% agent-native, four genuine surfaces deep
  6. The peer-fund benchmark — Kleiner vs. the deep-harvest funds, with the small-sample caveat
  7. The crown jewels — provider-by-provider on the four exemplars and the strong band
  8. Standards and the agentic turn — why the gaps stop being pedantry
  9. Security, auth, scopes, and compliance posture across the book
  10. The AI question, and the whitespace for the fund and its rivals
  11. The investable thesis — for Kleiner, and for everyone reading it
