About this paper

Avalara ranks 150th of 932 Fortune 1000 companies on AI investment, 4.6× the median, and its public API surface scores 75.0 on the Kin Score — fourth in a 31-company cohort whose mean is 59.2. The supply side is stronger than the demand side, which tells a seller something specific: this account will scrutinise an interface more closely than its buying intensity would predict, and the opening is depth in what it already runs rather than breadth into what it does not.

The supply side is where the useful detail is. Avalara has built a documentation layer deliberately for agents, and few companies of any size have one: an llms.txt that is a genuine site map rather than a marketing page, a published endpoint index of 2,469 standalone markdown documents covering 961 distinct operations, a markdown twin beside every product and SDK page, MCP servers per product, and its own published AI assistant.

The contract layer does not reach as far. Machine-readable definitions cover roughly 38% of the operations Avalara documents for agents, the largest single source among them is the company’s own Postman collection converted to OpenAPI — carrying a template variable where its server should be — and the definition with the clearest first-party provenance is not on the developer portal at all but inside a Java SDK in a GitHub organization the portal never names. Twelve of the ninety URLs the llms.txt advertises return 404.

An agent can read this account’s documentation. It cannot generate a client from most of it. That gap is the conversation.

Every technology carries the number of the account’s own postings it was found in and the term it matched on, so any claim can be checked or discarded. The complete machine-readable data bundle ships alongside the narrative.

What's inside

  5. The org map — function, location, posting recency, platform affinity
  6. The peer cohort — 30 tax-compliance and cloud-software peers, re-extracted identically
  7. The supply side — an agent-ready documentation layer over a partial contract layer
  8. What the account publishes about itself
  9. The openings — entry points, displacement targets, and discovery questions
