About this paper

I read GV’s portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the pitch, the evidence. Google Ventures, Alphabet’s independent venture arm, resolves to a broad, later-stage, category-leader book in my catalog, and 121 of its companies ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 121, because the interface is the part of a company an integrator, an acquirer, or an agent can actually inspect — and a fund’s book of APIs is a truer signal of the fund’s bet than its thesis page.

The headline carries an irony. GV is the venture arm of the company building the agentic web — the maker of Gemini, the author of the Agent-to-Agent protocol — and it holds the least agent-instrumented API book of any fund I can measure at its scale: just 37% of its API providers are agent-native, the lowest rate of the deeply-harvested majors save one. Behind a single towering exemplar — Stripe at 84.5 — the book falls off a cliff, five names clear the 70-point line, and the mean settles at 48.5, near the bottom of the peer set. GV backs the operators who define categories — HubSpot, Slack, GitLab, DocuSign, Stripe — but famous is not the same as agent-ready, and outside its small payments cluster this is an OpenAPI-broad, agent-shallow book. This report reads that signal company by company: the practice-area decomposition, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table, the head-to-head against ten rival funds, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.

What's inside

  1. Executive summary — the Google paradox, and the cliff behind Stripe
  2. The firm, and the book — the 121 API-bearing companies
  3. Portfolio decomposition — later-stage infra, and a small payments engine
  4. The composite Kin Score of the book — and why governance is the hole
  5. Agent-readiness of the portfolio — the Google paradox, measured
  6. The peer-fund benchmark — GV vs. ten rival funds, apples to apples
  7. The crown jewels — provider-by-provider on the exemplars and strong band
  8. Standards and the agentic turn — why the gaps stop being pedantry
  9. Security, auth, scopes, and compliance posture across the book
  10. The AI cluster, and the whitespace — with seven agent-native seedlings
  11. The investable thesis — for GV, and for everyone reading it
