The General Catalyst API Portfolio

Every General Catalyst company that ships an API, scored the way a machine reads it — and why a book that shipped agent front doors on banking and health APIs never shipped the governance behind them.

About this paper

I read General Catalyst’s portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the thesis page, the evidence. GC’s public investment list resolves to hundreds of companies in my catalog, and 114 of them ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 114, because the interface is the part of a company an integrator, an acquirer, or an agent can actually inspect — and a fund’s book of APIs is a truer signal of its real bet than any keynote about “responsible innovation” or “global resilience.”

The headline is specific to this fund. General Catalyst has quietly assembled one of the most agent-forward books in venture — 44 of 114 API providers are already agent-native, and 61% of the upper band ships a real MCP server — because its newest companies were born speaking the agentic protocols, shipping hosted MCP and authored skills as their first public surface. And those same companies handle banking rails and patient data while shipping almost no consent contracts, no examples, and incomplete security disclosure. GC is famous as a fintech-and-health transformation fund; its API book confirms the sectors and then tells you the uncomfortable part — the transformation companies built the agent front door before they built the compliance layer that banking and PHI demand. This report reads that signal company by company: the practice-area decomposition, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table, the head-to-head against ten rival funds, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.

What's inside

  1. Executive summary — agent-forward at the edges, governance-empty in the middle
  2. The firm, and the book — the 114 API-bearing companies
  3. Portfolio decomposition — the spine is AI, fintech, and dev-tools
  4. The composite Kin Score of the book — a real cap over a heavy thin tail
  5. Agent-readiness of the portfolio — 61% ship MCP, 12% ship consent
  6. The peer-fund benchmark — GC vs. ten rival funds, apples to apples
  7. The crown jewels — the seven exemplars and the born-agentic strong band
  8. Standards and the agentic turn — why the gaps stop being pedantry
  9. Security, auth, scopes, and compliance posture across the book
  10. The AI-and-regulated question, and the whitespace
  11. The investable thesis — for General Catalyst, and for everyone reading it
