API Evangelist Paper · Portfolio Report
The Bloomberg Beta API Portfolio
A small, focused seed book of the infrastructure agents will consume, scored the way a machine reads it — that has not yet been packaged for agents itself.
About this paper
I read Bloomberg Beta’s portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the fund’s thesis page, the evidence its companies ship. Bloomberg Beta is a deliberately small, early-stage fund, and its public portfolio resolves to a compact set in my catalog: 37 companies ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 37, because the interface is the part of a seed-stage company you can inspect before the narrative catches up — and for a fund this concentrated, the 37 interfaces tell a sharper story than any partner memo.
The headline is a ceiling rather than a peak. Bloomberg Beta’s API book has no exemplar — not one of the 37 companies clears the 70-point band, the book tops out at Slack (68.4), and a fat developing-and-thin middle pulls the mean to 48.3, the lowest of any fund in this series. It is an enterprise-and-infrastructure developer-tools book — the substrate agents are going to consume — with a distinct sales-intelligence and collaboration cluster (Sumble, Padlet, Syft Data) that has shipped the only three real hosted MCP servers in the portfolio. Yet governance averages 33.3 with half the upper band at zero, not one company in the top fifteen ships an idempotency signal, and the irony sits right at the top: Slack, the highest-scored holding and the archetypal bot platform, ships neither an MCP server nor agent skills. This report reads that gap company by company, and turns it into a punch-list for the fund and a map for everyone reading over its shoulder.
What's inside
- Executive summary — the ceiling is the story, and the irony at the top of the book
- The firm, and the book — the 37 API-bearing companies, and an honest sample caveat
- Portfolio decomposition — the book is infrastructure and dev-tools
- The composite Kin Score of the book — an empty exemplar band and half the upper book at zero governance
- Agent-readiness of the portfolio — zero idempotency, and MCP only at the edges
- The peer-fund benchmark — a small seed book against the deeply-harvested estates
- The crown jewels — provider-by-provider on the strong band and the born-agentic seedlings
- Standards and the agentic turn — why the gaps stop being pedantry for a book of substrate
- Security, auth, scopes, and compliance posture across the book
- The infrastructure question, and the whitespace for the fund and its rivals
- The investable thesis — for Bloomberg Beta, and for everyone reading it
