About this paper

I read Bessemer Venture Partners’ portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the pitch, the evidence. Bessemer’s public investment list resolves to hundreds of companies in my catalog, and 128 of them ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 128, because the interface is the part of a company an integrator, an acquirer, or an agent can actually inspect — and a fund’s book of APIs is a truer signal of the fund’s bet than its thesis page.

The headline is a quiet one that takes a second to land. Bessemer holds the best-built median in venture — its 128 API providers average a composite Kin Score of 52.5, the highest mean of any deeply-harvested fund I can measure, ahead of a16z, Insight, Accel, and Lightspeed — and yet it wins on the floor, not the peak. It ships only seven exemplar-band companies where a16z ships thirteen, and just 38% of its book is agent-native, dead in the middle of the pack. This is a seasoned SaaS-and-infrastructure estate that mastered OpenAPI breadth years ago and is only now, unevenly, bolting on the MCP servers, agent skills, and security-and-governance triad the agentic era demands. The quality is real and distributed; the gaps are structural — 43 of 101 upper-band providers score a flat zero on governance, idempotency lives on 4% of the book, and Fintech, the sector Bessemer built its name on, holds zero exemplars. This report reads that signal company by company: the practice-area decomposition, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table, the head-to-head against nine rival funds, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.

What's inside

  1. Executive summary — the best-built median, and the soft peak behind it
  2. The firm, and the book — the 128 API-bearing companies
  3. Portfolio decomposition — a seasoned SaaS-and-infrastructure estate
  4. The composite Kin Score of the book — and why governance is the weakness
  5. Agent-readiness of the portfolio — broad at the edges, thin in the middle
  6. The peer-fund benchmark — Bessemer vs. nine rival funds, apples to apples
  7. The crown jewels — provider-by-provider on the seven exemplars and top strong band
  8. Standards and the agentic turn — why the gaps stop being pedantry
  9. Security, auth, scopes, and compliance posture across the book
  10. The enterprise spine, the Fintech ceiling, and the whitespace
  11. The investable thesis — for Bessemer, and for everyone reading it
