About this paper

I read Battery Ventures’ portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the thesis page, the evidence. Battery’s public investment list resolves to hundreds of companies in my catalog, and 108 of them ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 108, because the interface is the part of a company an integrator, an acquirer, or an agent can actually inspect — and a fund’s book of APIs is a truer signal of the fund’s bet than its thesis page.

The headline is a happier one than most funds get from me before the caveat lands. Battery runs the most infrastructure-and-dev-tools-weighted API book in this series — Postman, JFrog, Splunk, Fastly, Databricks, Nutanix — and it converts that focus into a denser top than any of its multi-stage peers: seven exemplars out of 108 providers is the highest exemplar density of any deeply-harvested fund, and 44% of the book is agent-native, the highest rate of any traditional venture fund behind only the accelerators. Fastly alone ships 82 OpenAPI specs, the widest single contract surface across every fund I have scored. But those same 108 companies average a composite Kin Score of 51.2 — a dead heat with a16z, Insight, and Accel — because the depth is all in the contract and almost none of it in the scaffolding around it. Governance averages 38.4, nearly half the upper band scores a flat zero, idempotency is present in 3% of the book, and consent-and-identity in exactly zero. This report reads that signal company by company: the practice-area decomposition, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table, the head-to-head against ten rival funds, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.

What's inside

  1. Executive summary — the deepest-contract book, and the tell in its own governance
  2. The firm, and the book — the 108 API-bearing companies
  3. Portfolio decomposition — the book looks like an infrastructure fund
  4. The composite Kin Score of the book — deep specs, shallow rules
  5. Agent-readiness of the portfolio — the traditional funds' leader, on breadth not depth
  6. The peer-fund benchmark — Battery vs. ten rival funds, apples to apples
  7. The crown jewels — provider-by-provider on the seven exemplars
  8. Standards and the agentic turn — why the gaps stop being pedantry
  9. Security, auth, scopes, and compliance posture across the book
  10. The payments question, and the whitespace for the fund and its rivals
  11. The investable thesis — for Battery, and for everyone reading it
