The Bain Capital Ventures API Portfolio

Every Bain Capital Ventures company that ships an API, scored the way a machine reads it — a broad, enterprise-mature book whose one exemplar already exited, and whose live agent-native edge sits in its newest fintech leads.

About this paper

I read Bain Capital Ventures’s portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the pitch, the evidence. BCV’s public investment list resolves into my catalog, and 79 of its companies ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 79, because the interface is the part of a company an integrator, an acquirer, or an agent can actually inspect — and a fund’s book of APIs is a truer signal of the fund’s bet than its thesis page.

The headline is a quiet one that turns out to matter. The top of BCV’s API book is an exit ledger: the single company that clears the exemplar band — SendGrid at 76.0 — was acquired by Twilio in 2018, and three of the next four highest scorers (DocuSign, LinkedIn, and Turbonomic, now IBM) also already left the venture stage. The best-built APIs here are the ones that graduated years ago, while the newer, still-private leads — Finix, Attentive, Ansa — carry the richest agent-native stacks in the whole book from well down the composite table. Read cold, the 79 average a composite Kin Score of 51.0 — a dead heat with a16z, Insight Partners, and Norwest — because at the mean, every generalist fund’s book looks the same. The differentiation is at the top, and BCV’s top is thin: one exemplar, 35% agent-native, and exactly one hosted MCP server in the entire portfolio. This report reads that signal company by company — the decomposition, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table, the head-to-head against ten rival funds, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.

What's inside

  1. Executive summary — the exit-ledger top, and the live edge downmarket
  2. The firm, and the book — the 79 API-bearing companies
  3. Portfolio decomposition — a generalist's spread, no single thesis cluster
  4. The composite Kin Score of the book — and why governance is the weakness
  5. Agent-readiness of the portfolio — breadth without depth, one hosted MCP deep
  6. The peer-fund benchmark — BCV vs. ten rival funds, apples to apples
  7. The crown jewels — provider-by-provider on the one exemplar and the strong band
  8. Standards and the agentic turn — why the gaps stop being pedantry
  9. Security, auth, scopes, and compliance posture across the book
  10. The enterprise question, and the whitespace for the fund and its rivals
  11. The investable thesis — for BCV, and for everyone reading it
