About this paper

I read Accel’s portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the pitch, the evidence. Accel’s public portfolio resolves to a large set of companies in my catalog, and 196 of them ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 196, because the interface is the part of a company an integrator, an acquirer, or an agent can actually inspect — and a fund’s book of APIs is a truer signal of the fund’s bet than its thesis page.

The headline is not a number — it is a kind of book. Accel is the infrastructure fund: developer-and-enterprise tooling and horizontal infrastructure are 58% of the API providers, and that book carries the broadest, best-discovered contracts of any fund I have measured. Yet across all 196 companies — the layer whose entire job is to be consumed by other software — there is not a single first-party hosted MCP fronting a REST API. Even the two holdings that come closest stop short: Anthropic ships a candidate MCP tool set, not a hosted server, and 1Password’s MCP declares itself unhosted. The plumbing is laid, and not one length of it connects to an agent yet. This report reads that signal company by company: the practice-area decomposition, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table, the head-to-head against ten rival funds, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.

What's inside

  1. Executive summary — the infrastructure fund, and the plumbing that connects to no agent yet
  2. The firm, and the book — the 196 API-bearing companies (and the Krux coverage gap)
  3. Portfolio decomposition — the book is the plumbing (dev-tools + horizontal = 58%)
  4. The composite Kin Score of the book — broadest contracts, weakest governance
  5. Agent-readiness of the portfolio — the broadest contracts, the thinnest execution
  6. The peer-fund benchmark — Accel vs. ten rival funds, the median made literal
  7. The crown jewels — provider-by-provider on the exemplars and top strong band
  8. Standards and the agentic turn — why the gaps stop being pedantry
  9. Security, auth, scopes, and compliance posture across the book
  10. The infrastructure question, and the whitespace for the fund and its rivals
  11. The investable thesis — for Accel, and for everyone reading it
