The 500 Global API Portfolio

Every 500 Global company that ships an API, scored the way a machine reads it — a global seed book that is agent-native at the edges and governance-empty at the core, with five borrowed exemplars standing in for a thesis its own companies have not yet proven.

About this paper

I read 500 Global’s portfolio the way a machine reads it — not the launch post, the evidence. 500’s public investment list resolves to a very large book in my catalog, and 225 of those companies ship a public API I could pull, parse, and score on the same rubric I apply to Stripe. This report is about those 225, because for a fund whose thesis is breadth — thousands of early checks across dozens of countries — the interface is the one part of a seed company you can actually inspect before the traction shows up in the deck. It is written for the fund and its LPs, who want a machine-checkable read on a book too large and too global to diligence by hand, and for the competing fund or founder who wants to know who 500 backed, how those companies really score, and where the fund left the door open.

The headline is three facts that have to be held together. 500 has assembled the second-largest API-bearing book I can measure and one of the most agent-native, at 46% — a rate beaten only by the accelerators — and it posts the lowest composite mean of any deeply-harvested fund, 47.8. Its five exemplars are Stripe, SendGrid, Twilio, Solana, and Sentry: famous, mature names that predate 500’s seed thesis rather than define it, borrowed glory over a 122-company developing-band mass that ships agent surfaces before it ships governance — fund-wide governance averages 16.1 out of 100, the lowest facet reading in any portfolio I have scored. The full report reads that signal company by company: the decomposition of a wide global net, the Kin Score facet-by-facet, the twelve-dimension agent-readiness table and the emerging-market seedling bench, the head-to-head against ten rival funds, and the punch-list of what even the crown jewels have not shipped.

What's inside

  1. Executive summary — the widest global net, the lowest mean, five borrowed exemplars
  2. The firm, and the book — the 225 API-bearing companies
  3. Portfolio decomposition — a wide net, not a concentrated bet
  4. The composite Kin Score of the book — and why governance is nearly absent (16.1)
  5. Agent-readiness of the portfolio — the book's real upside, and the seedling bench
  6. The peer-fund benchmark — 500 vs. ten rival funds, apples to apples
  7. The crown jewels — provider-by-provider on five borrowed exemplars and the climbers
  8. Standards and the agentic turn — why the gaps stop being pedantry
  9. Security, auth, scopes, and compliance posture across the book
  10. The AI question, and the global whitespace for the fund and its rivals
  11. The investable thesis — for 500 Global, and for everyone reading it
